Vocational Rehab Teacher (VRT)

Duties: Hired by and reporting to the Field Director, the Vocational Rehabilitation Teacher II is responsible for assisting consumers in developing, achieving, and maintaining essential independent living and employment objectives within an assigned geographic region. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Some travel and irregular hours are involved and may require overnight stays. Works with the Regional EA Team to build quality relationships with businesses in order to provide career opportunities for consumers. (15%) Travels independently to consumers home, work site or training site and teaches consumers individually or in groups in core skill areas of emotional adjustment to blindness, independent living skills, communication skills, basic travel skills, use of support systems, and vocational skills. (40%) Completes all required agency training as outlined in Initial Training Plan and On the Job Training. (10%) Completes in-house reports and supply requisitions; uses electronic case management system to review and evaluate consumer case files in order to provide and coordinating vocational rehabilitative services and documents VRT case activity consistent with agency requirements. (10%) Participates as team leader working with the rehabilitation assistant. (5%) Develops community resources and provides information and referral services which supports consumers rehabilitation outcomes. (5%) Works collaboratively with other professional staff in assessing consumer readiness and skill needs and in planning and delivering necessary rehabilitation services to enable consumers to meet their rehabilitation outcomes. (5%) Uses vocational rehabilitation teacher skills and experience to assist in the planning and teaching for consumers and staff. (5%) Uses vocational rehabilitation teacher skills and experience to assist in providing training for new VR Teachers and IL Caseworkers. (5%)

Qualifications: Knowledge of: The vocational rehabilitation process. The medical, psychological, social, vocational and independent living issues faced by blind, visually impaired or otherwise disabled persons. Assessment techniques and tools. Report and record maintenance principles and practices. Skills and adaptations necessary for employment placement of disabled persons. Skills: Using personal computer and familiar with Windows and Microsoft Office software. Adapting teaching methods to the needs of persons who are blind, and who may be blind/multiply disabled, and elderly. Adapting training methods/tools to individual consumer vocational/independent living needs. Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate decimals and percentages; interpret graphs. Assisting consumers to adapt or modify common items in the home and workplace to be accessible. Assess, formulate, organize and implement an individualized program of instruction with consumers. Abilities: Learn and teach to read and write all aspects of uncontracted and contracted Braille. Assess and provide counseling, guidance, and employment assistance. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, departmental staff, agency staff, and outside agencies position interacts with. Willing/able to participate in a contiguous 4-6 week blindfold-immersion training program in Austin. Travel independently to consumers home, work site and various training sites and work unusual hours including overnight stays depending on tasks performed. Deliver, install and setup adaptive aids/devices. Provide presentations to various groups, community members and other entities concerning available services. Expresses ideas, instructions, and reports orally and/or in writing.

Additional Information: College Degree Preferred Related work experience considered in lieu of education
