Early Intervention Specialist (P/T)
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind
Riverdale, MD

Duties: Responsible for early intervention services for children who are blind or visually impaired from infancy through age five. Conduct visual assessments of children with visual impairment and/or multiple disabilities. Evaluate visual function level using various assessment tools. Identify children needing low vision examinations and coordinate scheduling with low vision services and follow-up services. Identify and develop goals for the Individual Education Plans and/or Individual Family Service Plans in conjunction with other service providers, if applicable. Provide visual stimulation services to children in the home, at the child care center or within community based settings. Support parents and other professionals in understanding the child’s visual impairment and provide resource information on how to work with children who are blind or have low vision. Provide oral and written reports of evaluations, treatments and progress updates. Assist with other Children’s Program activities, including but not limited to special events and summer camp. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor degree in Special Education or related field; Masters Degree in vision related studies or early childhood education preferred. Eligibility for or current endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia is preferred. Must be able and willing to travel independently throughout metro area to homes and schools during the week day. Related experience in a family centered, community based program for young children with vision and multiple disabilities. Experience teaching children who are visually impaired preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Computer literacy.
